*As of June 30, 2004 these are
the only two surviving Charter Members from back in June 7, 1966
when the Ocean Shores Lions Club was chartered. |
The Ocean Shores Lions Club and Lionesses held their meetings
at 7:00 a.m. in the Galilean Lutheran Chapel for several years
prior to the Lions Community Building being constructed. The
Ocean Shores Lions and Lioness's constructed the Lions Community
building in 1983-1984. The building was placed on Ocean Shores
City Property, the city being incorporated on November 3, 1970;
4 years 5 months after the Ocean Shores Lions Club received its
Charter on June 7, 1966. Presently there is a 75 year building
lease with the city. The Lions Club on the property along with
the Milo Schneider Park, Oudoor Restroom, and BBQ Grill also
built the Closed Circuit TV Station during this time period.
With the passing away of Lion
Harry Thompson, a Melvin Jones Fellow on April 15, 2002, the
City of Ocean Shores flew the American Flag at half mast for
over a week and in May 2002, renamed Lions Community Building
to the Harry Thompson Lions Building. The City Council also honored
Lion Harry Thompson for his many years of Community Service to
the Lions and the City of Ocean Shores and presented his wife
Neta Thompson with a Certificate and a Plaque that presently
are hanging on the wall of the Harry Thompson Lions Building.
Today the Ocean Shores Lions
Club use their experience, expertise, talent and creativity to
make their local communities a better place to live by sponsoring
one of the two Boy Scout Troops in town, emphasizing safe transportation
in support of the local Police Department and School Sponsors,
publicizes and present $50.00 Savings Bond to the two Students
of the Month for the North Beach Middle and High School, present
one $1,250.00 Scholarship each year to Grays Harbor College with
them matching the funds to make the Scholarship worth $2,500.00,
perform Sight, Hearing, Diabetic and Blood Pressure Checks each
year through the use of the Lions Health Screening Unit, assist
persons, as appropriate, who are having trouble or difficulty
in keeping their family together, sponsor three Peace Poster
Contests at the North Beach Middle School and at the Pacific
Elementary Schools involving up to One Hundred Three students.
In addition the Ocean Shores Lions Club takes steps to obtain
Eye Glasses and Hearing Aids for persons who need and qualify.
The Ocean Shores Lions Club also supports the Golden Ear, White
Cane, and Leader Dog Programs while supporting the United Way,
Salvation Army, North Beach Booster Club, Food Bank, LCIF, C.A.R.E.,
Leader Dogs, Diabetes Program and other Charitable Organizations
as well as sending delegates to the District 19G Conventions.
BUT, all is not work! Being
a part of the Ocean Shores Lions Club is not all service, how
could it be, when people with many of the same tastes and interests,
many of the same memories gather together on a regular basis.
The Ocean Shores Lions Club presently has 45 Members. |
